Autumn conjures thoughts of warm drinks, cosy clothes and the concentrated colours of dried leaves, from rust to yellow to all shades of brown. With cooler climes around the corner (or so we’d assume), the time is right to translate that warmth into our homes through décor that imbues our living spaces with colour and texture. Design Dispatch gathers some ideas to inspire.
Dried flowers
Dried flowers and leaves are synonymous with the change of season, and an abundant bouquet – the one featured here includes dried Cycad leaves, asparagus fern and Persimmon branches – makes a pretty statement.
Reflective materials
Reflective materials such as this glass vase with a gilded finish by Anthropologie add a little sparkle to a space, spreading warmth as light bounces of their shimmering surfaces.
Seasonal scents
There’s nothing quite like traces of freshly-cut timber or aromatic spices to ignite that warm feeling associated with autumn, and a scented candle with seasonal undertones will do just that.
Warm furnishings
As cooler temperatures allow for a little more than just a cotton sheet, consider a soft throw for the bedroom, or a blanket for the sofa in rustic colours, such as this fringed blanket from Zara Home.
Tactile flooring
A rug has the potential to alter the appearance of a room, whether through texture or colour. This hand-tufted rug by Scandinavian brand NJRD – the brainchild of design agency Bernadotte & Kylberg, founded by Prince Carl of Sweden and his design partner Oscar Kylberg – is inspired by mother nature, and conveys warmth in all ways.
Soft lighting
Soft and diffused light sets a mood, even more so if its source is an eye-catching lampshade in an inviting shade of hazelnut, soft pink or moss green, such as this Shisha lamp (far left) by British brand Porta Romana. In a nod to Aladdin’s lamp, its design features a round bottom and slender ceramic neck.
Seasonal cookware
The pioneers of colourful cast iron cookware, French brand Le Creuset, released a Halloween collection which includes a life-like casserole dish moulded like a pumpkin. The lid’s knob is shaped like the vegetable’s stem, and while we’re confident it’s perfect for cooking hearty food, it makes for a suitable piece of seasonal décor.
