The Sound of you Dreaming – Paul Scerri
Artist Paul Scerri delves into a parallel dimension in his upcoming solo exhibition, The Sound of you Dreaming, at Spazju Kreattiv – specifically one that exists in our sleep. Using his stylised visual language, which is the culmination of over 40 years working with ceramic, the sculptor explores how dreams are a “a rupture in the process of understanding the world because they contradict everyday notions of time and space, but at the same time they also contain strange and deep truths, both personal and collective.” From 17th January-9th March.
Jestem – Ivan Grixti
Having recently returned to Malta after years in Poland, artist Ivan Grixti is presenting a series of landscape paintings that explore the transformative power of nature and place at the Phoenicia Malta’s Palm Court Lounge. Meaning ‘I am’ in Polish, Jestem – curated by Prof Charlene Vella – explores Polish landscapes marked by their verticality and seasonal transformations; Maltese scenes characterised by their vibrant light and rugged textures; and semi-abstract compositions. Until 29th January.
Figure It – Anna Galea
Figure It by Anna Galea, curated by Melanie Erixon, presents a retrospective exploration of her artistic journey, focusing on her lesser-known yet extensive collection of nudes and human figure studies, created over decades during live drawing sessions but never before exhibited. Many of the pieces on display at Il-Kamra ta’ Fuq – in a variety of media ranging from watercolour to charcoal – were created in a single sitting, and offer a fresh perspective on her artistic versatility and evolution, tracing her engagement with the human form. Until 21st January.
Edward Pirotta
A collection of sculptures by Maltese artist of international repute, Edward Pirotta (1939-1968), will be displayed together in an exhibition at MUŻA – the National Museum of Art – for the first time in 59 years. The exhibition and an accompanying publication, curated and written by Washington-based Maltese art historian Prof. Joseph Paul Cassar, celebrates the artist’s legacy and his contributions to Malta’s modern art landscape. Until 2nd March.
Figure in Rods – Raymond Pitrè
Figure in Rods marks the final work of the late Maltese artist Raymond Pitrè, which will have a permanent position on the Malta International Contemporary Art Space (MICAS’s) campus in Floriana. Originally conceived in 1969 during an aggressive building boom in Malta, the sculpture is an exploration of psychological confinement – a result of Pitrè’s frequent reflection on the entrapping nature of urbanisation; a fittingly relevant issue for contemporary society. Until 29th June
Life and Passion Revisited – Ceasar Attard
Artist Caesar Attard has revived an unfinished project that originally began in 1985, which saw him working on a series of drawings with a religious theme, resulting in two sets of etchings, the first of which was printed in 1992 and culminated in an exhibition titled ‘Life and Passion’. “The second set sat on a shelf until now,” says the artist, whose ‘Life and Passion Revisited’ exhibition, curated by Norbert Francis Attard, is currently on display at Valletta Contemporary. “Now that those works seem to beckon from the past to be retrieved, I decided to expose them to the digital age and to consider the consequences.” Until 8th March.
