The long and languid days of summer may be approaching their end as the September countdown begins, when days get noticeably shorter and the hottest months of the year fade into our memories. But the water still beckons, even if just to lounge by a pool or sip on a drink in unfettered bliss. At these lidos, meticulously designed to provide an experience that revolves around fun, frivolity and relaxation, you can do exactly that. Keep reading to discover which you’ll be visiting first.
Sema
Forming part of the Best Western hotel in Qawra and located on its 10th floor, Sema Sky Bar & Lounge is capable of attracting visitors of its own accord. Designed by interior designer Carlo Schembri and the architectural team at &Bold Studio, Sema was intended to reflect the idea of movement – evident in the placement of the bar in line with the pool’s water level that creates a connection between the two, as well as the introduction of a permanent structure that provides shelter from strong winds, making it an accessible space all year round.
Flo
This adult-only rooftop beach club combines several elements intended to provide a refined experience to discerning guests. Located in St Julian’s and designed by DAAA Haus, the inspiration for Flo Skypool’s aesthetic was drawn from the natural charm of the Mediterranean landscape – stone, sand and the vibrant blues and greens of the sea. Among its many notable features are tables with integrated ice buckets and seating options that range from luxury daybeds to floating sunbeds.
Seed Rooftop
Perched on the 11th floor of the Hyatt Regency Malta in St Julian’s, Seed Rooftop, recently transformed by Design Hub Studio into a charming space brimming with Mediterranean appeal, transitions from a day-time pool and lounge to a sophisticated evening space with food and cocktails to match the mood – and sunset views that will leave you lulled well into the night.
1926 La Plage
The 1926 La Plage lido – which forms part of, but is separate to the nearby 1926 La Soleil Hotel & Spa in Sliema and renovated by interior designer Carlo Schembri and &Bold studio – embraces the same timeless aesthetic that can be seen throughout the rest of the brand’s collection. Beige parasols and baby blue sunbeds set a tranquil tone, while the infinity pool, which blends with the coast below in an almost continuous view of pool and sea, draws guests towards it and its partly-immersed sunbeds.
Café Del Mar
From sunrise to sun down all throughout summer, Café del Mar in Qawra draws the crowds for its pool, its parties and undeniably its evening skies. Designed to embrace the panoramic view of St Paul’s Islands, Comino and Gozo beyond, this popular lido – positioned adjacent to the Malta National Aquarium – boasts modern amenities and minimal embellishment, leaving its surroundings to do most of the talking.
Kora
Inspired by the harmony of the West African kora instrument, this adults-only beach club in St Paul’s Bay is all about poolside relaxation set against a backdrop of refined coastal living. Earth tones and textures create a restful setting around the pool at Kora, while the terrace above is ideal for golden hour cocktails and laid-back sophistication.
