AP Valletta has been named a finalist in the ‘Best Adaptive Renovation and Reuse Firm’ category by Architizer ahead of its 12th A+Awards edition.
Commenting about the nomination to DesignDispatch, Executive Director Konrad Buhagiar says ‘’We, at APValletta, were very excited to learn recently that Architizer A+Awards, one of the largest online platforms showcasing best practices in contemporary design and architecture, have chosen us as one of the top five practices worldwide in the ‘Best Adaptive Re-Use Firm’ category.”
“We feel immensely flattered and encouraged by their commendation of our portfolio of rehabilitation works in Malta, and proud to be putting Maltese contemporary architecture on the international map.’’
AP Valletta was shortlisted by judges for the ‘Best Adaptive Re-Use Firm’ category – which rewards overall portfolios of work rather than a specific project – for its “contribution to the preservation and rehabilitation of Maltese built heritage, which has been creatively reimagined to improve the environmental, social and economic performances of buildings while respecting their history.”
The other finalists in this category are McIntosh Poris Architects, Neri&Hu Design and Research Office, Atelier A, and Ziger|Snead Architects.
AP Valletta’s impressive track record of projects of national significance includes the regeneration of Dock n.1, the restoration and rehabilitation of the Phoenicia Hotel, Barrakka Lift, the extension of the St John’s Co-Cathedral Museum, the recently restored St. Paul’s Anglican Pro Cathedral, the Manoel Theatre and its Priory of Navarre, as well as the international collaboration with Renzo Piano Building Workshop on Valletta’s new City Gate, Opera House and Parliament House.
The firm remarks that by increasing the longevity and efficiency of existing buildings, and reducing the need for demolition and new construction, it is contributing to spearheading a sustainable approach to architecture, challenging the status quo with regards to the perception and preservation of local heritage.
“Each project intertwines ambitious conversions, sustainable adaptive reuse strategies and rigorous restoration, working on a vast range of projects and scales,” it states.
Public voting is open to everyone until Friday 10th May, while the awards ceremony will take place on 3rd June in New York.
