The Malta Architecture and Spatial Planning (MASPs) Awards announced the appointment of business leader Helga Ellul as new jury Chairperson for the 2024 edition.
The awards programme, organised by the Planning Authority, was launched five years ago “to recognise some of the outstanding quality architecture and design work that is happening around the island, while help influence the collective design change we need in our built environment,” it said in a statement.
Commenting on her appointment, the new Chairperson says “having served as a member on this jury in the past, I have a clear understanding of the high professionality with which these awards are carried out. Being appointed chairperson of the MASP jury is a humbling privilege but it also comes with a weight of the responsibility.”
Besides serving as CEO of her own advisory firm, Advise, Helga has enjoyed a long and varied career in business. She led Playmobil Malta as CEO for over 35 years until 2012, and served as President of the Malta Chamber of Commerce until 2011, becoming its first female president.
In 1994, she was awarded the Midalja għall-Qadi tar-Repubblika, as well as the German Officers’ Cross of the Order of Merit in 2011.
“We are honoured to have engaged Mrs Helga Ellul as the new jury Chairperson of MASP. Well-respected for her leadership in the business sector, we are confident that she will bring a new dimension to the MASP awards and its brand,” says Oliver Magro, Executive Chairperson of the Authority.
“If it weren’t for these awards most well-designed projects remain unappreciated and ‘hidden stories’ of the creative local talent we have around us.”
The MASP Awards fall under the patronage of the President of Malta. The programme has become a fixture in the industry’s events calendar, showcasing the work and talent of local architects, interior designers and architecture students.
