Bold colour choices are attractive for their tendency to bring a bit of fun into a space – which is all well when it’s a moveable piece that can find its perfect spot in various areas around the house. But a kitchen? There’s a risk with loving a strong colour today and being less sure of it in a couple of years’ time.
Which is why neutral colours tend to dominate when designing or selecting a kitchen – they age well, and there’s an infinite number of shades to choose from. We’ve selected six soft colours to inspire your own kitchen design in a soothing, neutral shade.
Cream
Cream is a generic term for a colour that comes in many different shades, be it an off-white such as ivory, or with a hint of grey, such as taupe. It tends to be a warmer choice than bright white, and the exact shade can vary considerably according to the amount of natural light inside the room.
Pale green
Pale or faded shades of green are still considered neutral, and yet, bring in an element of colour without pushing the envelope too far. It’s also a colour that complements many other neutral shades, from white to brown and the many versions in between.
Beige
Similarly to cream, beige comes in quite a choice of shades – from a biscuit brown to yellow-tinged camel – as seen in this Shaker-style kitchen with a minimalist frame. Lighter shades tend to be favoured more for kitchens, mostly for their timeless appeal and ability to bring light into a space.
Greige
If you’re torn between a warm and cool colour scheme, greige might be the answer. This blend of grey and beige is an adaptable colour that tricks the eye, making it a versatile shade that complements a broad range of finishes.
Wood
Wood kitchens are often associated with classic kitchen designs, the kind that were hugely popular a few decades ago. But the beauty of wood is that it works for any style – the contemporary aesthetic of this Scandinavian-style kitchen can hold its own into the future.
White
And then of course, the classic white. A perennial favourite, white and its many variants present as a blank canvas for bringing colour into a kitchen through finishes and decor. Whether a modern, classic cottage or contemporary style kitchen, white is a choice for the ages.
