For some rooms, the application of lime plaster became a welcome alternative to tiles, while for others, it is a finish chosen for its texture, warmth and resemblance to organic materials such as stone and clay.
The popularity of lime plaster also lies in its durability and resistance to moisture, which is why it has acquired quite a following for bathroom and kitchen finishes. In this feature, we’ve gathered examples that display the versatility of lime plaster and its application throughout the home.
A functional wall
This Mallorcan home designed by Bloomint Studio makes use of locally-sourced materials for its interior finishes. This built-in shelf that connects various parts of the house is plastered in a soft beige hue that connects it to its surroundings.
A Mediterranean bathroom
For this rental holiday home, interior designer Martina Fenech Adami, founder of Studio Niche, opted for lime plaster in a warm shade of terracotta instead of tiles, resulting in a minimalist space that is clean, uniform and that channels a Mediterranean aesthetic.
A statement hallway
A raw wall plaster created an attractive nook of that area adjacent to the stairs in this home project. Often a forgotten space, it takes on a character of its own with an irregular appearance accentuated by the room’s height.
A polished bedroom
In this London home featured on Dezeen, architecture studio Polysmiths used lime plaster for many of the walls, including the one that separates the main bedroom from the en-suite bathroom completed with a smooth and refined finish.
An inviting dining area
Studio Architecture for London used a mix of clay and lime plaster finishes for this five-storey Georgian house. Using a palette of natural tones, the material complements the original timber floors and also provides airtightness for better insulation.
A restful living space
Interior designer Louisa Grey transformed her London Victorian home into a haven intended to inspire rest and positivity, and opted for neutral-coloured walls to achieve this. A limewash paint she designed for paint brand Bauwerk creates a textured backdrop throughout the home.
