Prolific architecture studio AP Valletta, whose diverse portfolio of projects includes the recently inaugurated restored tower and spire at St. Paul’s Pro Cathedral, the rehabilitation of Dock 1 in Bormla and the design of the Barrakka lift, has been named Best Adaptive Reuse and Renovation Firm at the 2024 Architizer A+ Awards.
AP Valletta emerged as the winners in the People’s Choice category, and reflects a prestigious recognition of the firm’s vast portfolio of work, rather than a single project. Among the notable firms it was up against in this category is Neri & Hu, which was chosen as the ‘Jury Winner’ in the same category
“Competing with thousands of entries from over 80 countries, we emerged as the ‘Popular Choice Winner’ in this category,” the firm announced while thanking friends and supporters for making the win possible.
“AP Valletta has been recognised for its contribution to the preservation and rehabilitation of built heritage, which has been creatively reimagined to improve the environmental, social and economic performances of buildings,” it said in a statement.
“By increasing the longevity and efficiency of existing buildings, and reducing the need for demolition and new construction, AP are contributing to spearheading a sustainable approach to architecture, challenging the status quo with regards to the perception and preservation of our heritage.”
AP Valletta’s impressive track record of projects of national significance includes the extension of the St John’s Co-Cathedral Museum, the restoration and rehabilitation of the Phoenicia Hotel, the restoration of the Manoel Theatre and its Priory of Navarre, its very own offices on Sappers Street, as well as the international collaboration with Renzo Piano Building Workshop on Valletta’s new City Gate, Opera House and Parliament House.
