With its imposing facade and sublime interiors, the inaugural property in North America for Corinthia Hotels, The Surrey, has opened its doors, welcoming guests into Art Deco-inspired luxury that is described by Corinthia Hotels CEO, Simon Casson, as a “love letter to New York and a beacon of the city’s creative spirit”.
The 16-storey building, owned by real estate moguls the Reuben Brothers, has been transformed to include 70 guest rooms, 30 suites, and 14 private residences, with striking interiors by the famed Martin Brudnizki of Martin Brudnizki Design Studio (MBDS).
“Inspired by the timeless elegance of uptown Manhattan, MBDS’s design for The Surrey seamlessly blends Corinthia Hotels’ signature sophistication with the essence of classic American art deco,” the studio states.
“With rich materials and a layered contemporary classic style, we crafted a refined, residential ambiance that balances historical charm with modern grace, and envelops guests in sublime comfort.”
The Surrey’s interiors combine a residential feel with details that pay tribute to New York, such as handcrafted Murano chandeliers and bespoke furniture pieces. Textures throughout the hotel abound, seen in wall finishes, cabinetry, upholstered furniture and floor rugs.
The team drew inspiration from the bridges of Central Park for The Surrey’s suites – including the Bethesda Grandeur Suite, Pine Bank Bridge Suite, Greywacke Heritage Suite, and The Surrey Suite – which feature design elements that pay homage to their namesakes.
From crown mouldings that reflect the unique architectural style of each bridge to illustrations that are hung within each suite’s grand armoire, the spaces feature distinct design elements, coupled with elegant living spaces, luxurious beds, and opulent bathrooms.
