While the weeks ahead may be hectic with festive activities, there’s no shortage of cultural events that offer a break from the Christmas blitz. From the wrapping up of Rebecca Bonaci’s Ġuf exhibition at Spazzju Kreattiv to the opening of watercolour artist Kenneth Zammit Tabona’s residency at The Phoenicia Malta, Design Dispatch highlights six solo exhibitions that are not to be missed.
Mediterranean Gardens by Kenneth Zammit Tabona
Throughout December, the works of watercolourist Kenneth Zammit Tabona will be on display within the Palm Court lounge at The Phoenicia Malta. The exhibition of pen and ink watercolour paintings, titled Mediterranean Gardens, is inspired by lush gardens the artist has visited and others he imagined, all the while featuring playful depictions of plants and trees, as well as an abundance of detail through ponds, pots, fountains and garden sculptures. Until 31 December.
Ġuf by Rebecca Bonaci
In her debut solo exhibition, Ġuf, held at Spazzju Kreattiv, Rebecca Bonaci explores and celebrates contemporary motherhood through visual art, examined through a cultural, historical and societal lens. The collection of works draws on iconography and imagery from the prehistoric period which are interpreted by the artist in a contemporary context, while drawing on her own personal experience of motherhood, childbearing and femininity. Until 3 December.
New Forms by James Vella Clark
Currently on display at the Form showroom in Msida is a collection of around 15 large artworks on canvas in artist James Vella Clark’s familiar abstract expressionist approach. The unusual gallery setting aims to ignite a conversation about the intersection of art and living spaces, while his vivid works “serve as a testament to the enduring beauty of art in an ever-changing world, and an invitation to acknowledge that the freedom that art brings with it, is best embraced in homes.” Until January.
Revelations by Isabel Warrington
Artist, designer and illustrator Isabel Warrington launched her latest solo exhibition this week at Gemelli Art Gallery at Ta’ Qali Crafts Village, titled Revelations – the result of an introspective journey mainly executed in acrylic, watercolour and ink. Featured within a number of her pieces are recycled objects, such as buttons, buckles and stationery she collects, that encourage the viewer to contemplate the meaning behind each piece while exploring their own interpretations. Until 23 December.
Narratives for Postmodern Love by Gabriel Buttigieg
In his upcoming solo exhibition titled Narratives for Postmodern Love, artist Gabriel Buttigieg creates “a visual essay that portrays the way we love, and also, perceive love, in the 21st century: confusing, multi-layered, complex, raw, uncertain… lonely, painful and fearsome.” The intimate series of paintings that will be displayed at The Splendid in Valletta is described as one that “encapsulates much of who Gabriel is, and what his art is about.” From 7 to 22 December.
A House of Glass by Jon Grech
On display on the upper floor of Camilleri Paris Mode’s Rabat store is a captivating exhibition by artist Jon Grech, titled A House of Glass. The collection of oil pastel artworks explores the idea of “spaces that mould the entities that inhabit them through the multiplication of vistas, the use of glass and glass-like structures, and the geometry of colour fields.” Until mid-December.
