As a gateway to the islands for millions of passengers each year, the Malta International Airport has been consistently evolving to reflect the steady increase in traveler traffic, spurring its newly unveiled investment programme that will result in the airport’s Eastward Expansion project.
The announcement reveals a five-year investment programme, concluding in 2029, valued at €345 million.
The expansion includes “new check-in desks and departure gates for smoother journeys, more circulation space for added comfort, a wider selection of eateries and retail outlets, more natural light with expansive glass and double-height space and green spaces designed to create a serene and relaxing environment.”
“Limestone arches will be used to create visual continuity with the existing building and preserve our terminal’s iconic look,” MIA shared.
The airport’s CEO, Alan Borg, noted “this project will deliver significant improvements, allowing our guests to enjoy a more seamless experience on departure. Green spaces, natural lighting and architectural elements that preserve the iconic look of the existing building will also be prioritised.”
“Incidentally, this week marks 10 years since I was appointed CEO. The past decade has been exciting in terms of growth and investments, but our newly unveiled investment programme is set to be truly game-changing for our airport.”
