“In an industry often defined by either mass production or artisanal exclusivity, Domestica stands apart,” says Chris Vassallo Cesareo. “As a family-run business with over 55 years of experience, we’ve cultivated a rare strength: the ability to offer clients both locally crafted bespoke furniture and a curated selection of top international brands under one roof.”
As Managing Director and second generation to lead Domestica, Chris has evolved the business founded by his father from one that dealt exclusively in manufacturing to one that successfully merged made-to-measure with the retail of premium imported brands.
Where it started
At the height of its manufacturing operations, Domestica was already working with foreign brands – manufacturing sofas for British company Parker Knoll and kitchens for Italian brand Berloni under licence in Malta. This set a standard of quality that helped forge the path towards representing quality brands locally.
“Our in-house manufacturing allows us to design and build custom kitchens, wardrobes, wall panelling, and tailored furniture that fit seamlessly into any space. Every piece is designed with intention and built with precision, guided by generations of craftsmanship and attention to detail,” says Chris.
“We’ve also built lasting partnerships with leading European brands – Pedini kitchens, Egoitaliano sofas, Zuiver Group, and many more, offering clients stylish, ready-made options that reflect today’s most exciting design trends. Whether it’s Italian elegance, Nordic minimalism or bold statement pieces, our showroom presents a layered collection that speaks to a wide range of lifestyles.”
How it works
“This dual offering is what makes Domestica truly unique,” Chris adds, explaining that if a client wants an imported kitchen but requires specific customisations – such as an L-shaped kitchen which needs to be fitted on angled walls resulting in unsightly gaps – the finishing touches can be done in-house.
Through this combined approach, clients could also mix ready-made furniture with made-to-measure for their projects. Chris singles out a recent residential project at Mercury that comprised a Pedini kitchen complemented with custom cabinetry for the bedroom, including a wardrobe, vanity units, sliding doors, shelving, mirrors and headboards.
“When working with designers, this approach also helps for colour and material continuity throughout the project, where colour or decor elements in one piece of furniture can be carried to another.”
On a commercial level, Chris points towards Samizu restaurant in Pieta that also adopted this approach according to the vision of the designers and client. “The bar counter was made in our factory, while the tables and chairs, internal and external, were chosen from our Italian supplier. The approach was coordinated – and the end result is holistic.”
“We believe good design is not one-size-fits-all. It can be custom-tailored or cleverly curated. At Domestica, clients don’t have to choose between bespoke or branded – they can have the best of both worlds, all with the guidance of our experienced team.”
