The space we inhabit
The work of six renowned, Malta-based contemporary artists will be installed across all three galleries at MICAS in Floriana, in a collective exhibition that centres on the concept of imagined space. Featuring the work of Caesar Attard, Austin Camilleri, Joyce Camilleri, Anton Grech, Pierre Portelli and Vince Briffa, the display will illustrate the depth and richness of contemporary art practice in Malta while marking the beginning of regular exhibitions within the programme that explore and showcase Malta-based art within a global context. 14th June-28 September.
Fuq, Fil-Kamra
Liliana Fleri Soler’s own writings of memories from her childhood, especially those experienced in her grandmother’s house, form the basis of her latest exhibition of sculptures and paintings at Il-Kamra ta’ Fuq in Mqabba, curated by Melanie Erixon. Featuring a cast of curious, elongated characters and animals rendered in her distinctive style, the artist’s approach for each sculpture is personal, including the use of handmade textiles sourced from a cherished chest from her own childhood, as well as her mother’s and grandmother’s. Until 8th June.
Meople
Artist Johanna Barthet and sculptor Trevor Diacono present a show of expressive paintings and sculptures that explore the fragile, funny and familiar ways in which people connect with each other. Opening at Art by the Seaside Gallery in Isla on 6th June, the exhibition presents a world where humour, vulnerability, and human connection collide while exploring “how we see parts of ourselves in others and how others shape the way we see ourselves.” 6th-20th June.
Look at Me
International photographer to the stars Lorenzo Agius will be hosting his first exhibition in Malta this September at Spazju Kreattiv, but fans and followers may catch a glimpse of the themes it will explore throughout the month of June at the Palm Court Lounge inside Phoenicia Malta. The exhibition, curated by Prof Charlene Vella, offers an introduction to Lorenzo’s work who is celebrated for his intimate and iconic portraits of cultural legends – from Ewan McGregor and Angelina Jolie to Jack Nicholson and Bill Nigh – that capture the charisma, vulnerability, and spectacle of celebrity. Until 30th June.
Dystopian Garden
On display within the atrium at St James Cavalier is a collection of works by Justin Amrhein that utilises the natural and architectural ambience of the light-filled space within Spazju Kreattiv. Here, the elevated glass ceiling, spiral staircase and the living palm tree collectively evoke an opulent greenhouse or botanical garden, which serves as the conceptual inspiration for the exhibition currently on display. Until 22nd June.
Karoo Pietà
Christine X Art Gallery is hosting Karoo Pietà, a personal and evocative solo exhibition by South African artist Glendine who invites viewers into an emotional and symbolic journey that bridges the rugged stillness of the South African Karoo with the spiritual resonance of the Madonna. For the artist, the Karoo is a space of reflection and connection, a canvas of grief and healing. This emotional landscape is mirrored in her use of the Madonna figure, reimagined in a context that speaks to her own loss, resilience, and motherhood. 14th-28th June.
Your MUŻA: Giuseppe Calì
The second exhibition as part of the series ‘Your MUŻA’ will be spotlighting local artistic genius Giuseppe Calì. The touring exhibition will start at the Basilica of Our Lady of Porto Salvo and St Dominic in Valletta until 4th June, after which it will be set up at the Sanctuary Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady in Mosta (12th-25th June). It will visit Lija and Sliema later in the year. The exhibition highlights Calì’s outstanding skill by bringing together some of his most renowned masterpieces – including ‘The Death of Dragut’ (loaned from MUŻA) – alongside art pieces from contemporaries, artistic sketches and documents that shed light on aspects of the artist’s life. Ongoing.
