Malta’s first bowling alley, which has been attracting crowds of all ages since 1988, has reopened its doors with a brand-new look – or rather, a nostalgic one that transports guests back to the neon-filled, arcade-packed amusement and entertainment spaces of decades past.
Forming part of a new venue in St Julian’s called The Eden – comprised of 4,000 square metres of entertainment space spread over three floors – is SuperBowl, the revamped bowling alley featuring 20-lane ten-pin bowling and the new addition of duckpin bowling, as well as Augmented Reality darts, three karaoke rooms and pinball machines.
Interior designer Carlo Schembri led the transformation of this space, along with the team from &Bold studio, who sought to redefine SuperBowl into a contemporary family entertainment centre with a nod to the past.
“Carlo emphasised the importance of preserving the space’s rich heritage. For many, the SuperBowl represented unforgettable evenings filled with nostalgia, a legacy we were determined to honour,” the studio shared.
“With The Eden, we have created a space that revives the magic of the 80s while paying homage to the cherished memories associated with the SuperBowl. From the moment you step into either SuperBowl or XP Arcade, you are greeted by vibrant neon lights, retro patterns, and pixelated characters, all designed to transport you back in time.”
In an example of ‘retro revival’ design, where nostalgic and timeless design elements blend with contemporary ones, SuperBowl’s aesthetic draws on the cultural icons of the computer decade – “Vaporwave, pixellations, and beloved 80s imagery served as our inspiration, helping us to meticulously curate each area. “
From the game areas to the dining outlets, “each element has been carefully selected to create a seamless blend of nostalgia and contemporary fun, ensuring that every corner of SuperBowl Malta offers a timeless and immersive experience for visitors of all ages.”
