Located along the quaint and historic Hilda Tabone Street in Birgu, leather atelier Birgu Blue is hard to miss – the result of its alluring, deep-blue shopfront and its vitrine-like exterior that beckon visitors to explore a treasure trove of goods inside.
This same appeal has kept visitors curious and returning ever since its opening in 2019, selling leather goods designed and handmade by the store’s head designer, Ozzy Chien.
“As we mark five years of Birgu Blue, we celebrate the incredible talent of our head designer, Ozzy Chien! From Taiwan to Rome, and now Malta, Ozzy’s journey in luxury leathercraft has shaped our collections with his unmatched skill and passion for perfection,” the brand shared.
Birgu Blue is a bottega-style shop with an on-site leather workshop that prides itself on creating unique pieces by hand. “Our atelier defies modernity and goes ‘against the grain’ of modern production lines and hurried processes for economies of scale. It offers luxury defined through days of work for every item produced in-house, one at a time, unique every time.”
The store was founded five years ago by Claude Zammit Trevisan, with the intention of curating an eclectic selection of accessories including hand-stitched leather pieces – ranging from bags and wallets to journal covers, belts and coin cases – eco-luxe perfumes, silk scarves, batik cushions, homeware, and limited-edition prints.
The shop also has a gourmet section of fine Ceylon teas, Ethiopian coffees, home-made organic jams, chutneys and pure honey.
