Architectural design studio I+A and 3D printing company Invent 3D have joined forces to create an experimental, 3D printed lounge chair made from recycled plastic that was sourced in Malta.
Designed and manufactured locally, the project, titled CLEAR/FORM, transforms waste into a transparent, sculptural object that provokes curiosity and tactile engagement.
The collaboration between the award-winning studio and the leading digital fabrication company questions whether additive manufacturing can move beyond function to produce artefacts that can be admired and lived with.
“Its fluid form bridges circular economy principles with contemporary aesthetics, opening a dialogue about how 3D printed objects might be perceived in our daily lives,” the team asserts.
The concept and journey of CLEAR/FORM will be presented on Wednesday 24th September at FiftySix Design Talks being held at Valletta Design Cluster, led by François Mangion (I+A) and David Sciberras (Invent 3D).
Its physical debut will take place at the second edition of local design expo designMT 2025 (29 September-4 October), where it will be exhibited in the historic courtyard of the Auberge d’Aragon, Valletta.
“Rather than give answers, it asks how design and 3D printing can create objects of desire and beauty,” the team adds.
