There’s something about swinging on a seat that invokes childhood memories so closely associated with freedom and fearlessness. As adults, we may not want to swing higher and higher, but swaying to a gentle breeze while curled up in a suspended chair sounds just as tempting. DesignDispatch rounds up six striking hanging chairs to inspire your next purchase.
Peacock by Anthropologie
This indoor and outdoor hanging peacock chair by Anthropologie, with its swirling pattern in natural rattan is a recurring favourite. The chair comes sealed with clear lacquer for added durability as well as a white cushion – and timeless appeal.
Patricia Urquiola for Louis Vuitton
In its exquisite homeware collection, Louis Vuitton debuted a hanging chair designed by Spanish architect and industrial designer, Patricia Urquiola. Featuring adjustable leather belts and cushions in lively yellow and caramel colours, the seat is made with a neutral hand-knitted cord and finished with playful fringe.
Egg by Nanna Ditzel
This may be the design that started it all – the egg chair by Danish designer Nanna Ditzel. Created in 1959, the designer imagined a playful piece of furniture suitable for inside and out in an organic form, and is a testament to her unconventional interpretation of how a chair sits in a space. The egg chair, which came back into production in 2014, is produced by Sika Design.
KIDA by Dedon
This hanging lounge chair designed by Stephen Burks for outdoor furniture brand Dedon features a cradle-like structure made of aluminium rods and wrapped in colourful rope that is central to many of the brand’s designs. The plush cushion covers most of the seating area, so that, in the American designer’s words, one feels “as free as the breeze” when swinging.
Serena & Lily
Homeware brand Serena & Lily’s popular hanging chair, available in natural rattan and white, features a sculptural frame with hand-bent rattan and a scooped seat. It comes with a heavy-duty rope for hanging, but is recommended for indoor use for a longer life-span.
Pod by CB2
A powder-coated aluminium frame forms the skeleton of this hanging chair by CB2, which is handwoven in recyclable resin, in what resembles natural wicker. The pod chair is hand-made in Indonesia by local artisans, and could be completed with an optional weather-resistant cushion in taupe.
