A series of abstract paintings and works on paper created by academic, researcher and multimedia artist Vince Briffa will be exhibited at The Heritage Gallery, one of three galleries belonging to the University of Greenwich in greater London.
Marginalia, which opens its doors on 8th April until 10th May, will display a selection of pieces that are a reflection of the artist’s approach to his work, which he views as an ongoing book.
“Each work, like a mark, a note or a thought made in its margins, adds a new layer of reflection and meaning to the organic and entwining flow of narrative of the main text,” the gallery notes.
The works in this exhibition explore what happens in the margins in relation to the main text, “extracted from a current chapter, in themselves in a state of becoming, that dialogically contribute and become one with Briffa’s current narrative concerning the interdependence of form, paint, colour, materials and gesture, and anything else in between.”
Marginalia is the latest exhibition in a diverse career for Briffa, who is a tenured Professor of Art at the University of Malta with a broad and long list of accomplishments, including exhibitions in prestigious museums and galleries, ranging from the Venice Biennale (in 1999 and 2019) to the Museum of Fine Arts in Romania.
His gallery and site-specific artworks and installations span a remarkable range of disciplines, including painting, text, photography and moving images. In his own words, “I am not a painter or sculptor, I am also not a filmmaker or a writer. I produce ‘work’. It is my vocabulary. It is the vehicle that best embodies my thoughts and connects all my creative output.”
