Dutch furniture brand Eichholtz and New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art have come together to produce a collection, The Met X Eichholtz, that is inspired by 5,000 years of art and history exhibited at the world-renowned institution.
“The Met X Eichholtz collection was borne out of an intense but joyous 12 months of research,” the brand says. “Our Chief Creative Officer Edwin van der Gun and the design team were given unparalleled access to explore the galleries and select artworks that now form the inspirational foundation for the collection.”
Featuring close to 100 unique products in a rich material palette that includes marble, travertine, hand-blown glass and pure wool, each piece – ranging from furniture to lighting and décor – was crafted “to tell a story of ancient civilizations up to the present day that with our creative vision and contemporary interpretation, feels luxurious and ideal for a modern lifestyle.”
Among the eclectic range is the side table Matthias with its antique gold finish and green marble top, inspired by a pair of ornate side tables that are believed to be influenced by an unfinished drawing by Matthias Lock, a British 18th century designer and carver.
The Sahure chandelier with its brushed brass finish and smoke glass is inspired by a grand, ancient Egypt-era column formed after a date palm tree, while the Horus table lamp, with a copper bronze finish and linen mix shade, draws from a statue of the god Horus in The Met’s Egyptian art collection.
“An opportunity such as this cannot be underestimated,” says the Chief Creative Officer. “With travel, research, and the exploration into cultures and craftmanship other than our own forming the backbone of Theo Eichholtz’s founding principles, this new collaboration with The Met feels like the perfect expression of that.”
