Fragmented Sculptures
Art and architecture photographer Alex Attard will be exhibiting photographs from his latest book, ‘Exposure – Fragmented Sculptures of an Island Coast’ at Marie Gallery 5 in Sliema. The captivating collection of black and white images, in itself the result of an eight-year-long photographic journey, documents Malta’s rugged coastline, highlighting beauty in impermanence and the might of mother nature. On 7th August.
Figures Unbound
In this solo exhibition at Il-Kamra ta’ Fuq by Alfred Buttigieg, curated by Melanie Erixon, human figures are the subject, depicted in both realistic and expressionist forms. The focus is not on facial expressions but rather on the positions of the bodies and heads – while some display contorted bodily movements with elongated limbs and twisted torsos, others show realistic depictions of the figure, reminiscent of Malta’s prehistoric interpretations of beauty. From 9th August.
Cumulus
Artist Norbert Francis Attard is displaying a collection of contemporary art preserved by his eponymous foundation at an exhibition titled Cumulus, currently on display at Valletta contemporary. Cumulus brings together the diverse works of 29 internationally renowned artists, including Gilbert and George, Ai Weiwei, and Tracey Emin, in an eclectic collection that reflects his discerning eye and evolving tastes over decades. Until 14th August and re-opens on 4th September.
Dari
Artist Lara Vella is displaying her fourth solo exhibition, Dari, at the Palm Court at Phoenicia Malta throughout August with a collection of acrylic paintings that capture an idyllic essence of the Maltese islands. A promising yet relatively new talent in the world of fine arts, Lara weaves elements of nostalgia into every piece, from vivid interpretations of wildly grown fruits that draw associations with our islands, such as ‘bajtar’ (prickly pear) and ‘rummien’ (pomegranate), to evocative scenes of the sea. From 1st August.
Disclosure
In 2020, photographer and multimedia artist Ritty Tacsum created a safe digital space where people could freely express their personal confessions and desires; the results of which formed the foundation of her latest exhibition Disclosure at the Malta Society of Arts, curated by Lisa Gwen. A selection of confessions were transformed into final ‘tableaux’, ultimately creating a community collaboration which thrived on the participation of others, resulting in “a powerful and moving collection of visual art pieces that reflect the collective consciousness.” Until 14 August.
Grafika
The recently launched Jo Borg Gallery in Sliema is showcasing the works of contemporary local artists Joyce Camilleri, Stephania Micallef, Anabel Cordina and Irene Zammit, alongside foreign graphic artist Vlado Goreski. The exhibition, titled Grafika, presents a collection of works on paper that celebrate traditional and experimental graphic techniques, as well as digital photography and mixed media practices, highlighting the timelessness of analogue practices grounded in drawing, printmaking and painting. From 3rd August.
Clay / Craft / Concept

This collective exhibition taking place at the Malta Society of Arts investigates different ways of creating with clay, from prehistory to contemporary practice. Clay / Craft / Concept, curated by Gabriel Buttigieg with exhibition design by Tom van Malderen, seeks to create a dialogue between sculptural and functional clay objects by bringing together a large and eclectic group of artists, all of whom think and create differently. From 22nd August.
