Positioned along The Strand in Sliema and with an enviable view of Valletta and its iconic skyline right across the water, this three-bedroom apartment may have been intended as a luxury rental, but was designed to embody a homely feeling with thoughtfully-planned modifications that enhance the space at hand.
The apartment was brought to life by interior designer Jully Khamula, founder of Khamula Interior Design Studio, whose portfolio of projects spans from restaurants and beauty salons to offices and residential spaces.
“One of our recent projects is the OneOneO Scandi apartment, a luxurious three-bedroom residence located in Sliema. From the outset, this property was planned as a luxury rental, representing a great investment for its owners,” says Jully.
“Having resided on the island for over 11 years, I firmly believe that investing in rental properties with the same standards as one’s own home is the key to long-term success. Rushing to furnish with outdated pieces and expecting high rent doesn’t align with our philosophy.”
Bearing her client’s vision in mind, Jully explored a series of solutions that would enhance the apartment’s various spaces, such as the introduction of a home office adjacent to the living area.
“We introduced metal and glass partitions in this area that maintain an airy feel within the open plan space while providing an intimate working environment. In addition, one can enjoy stunning views of Manoel Island and Valletta while working,” says Jully.
Her design also sought to increase storage solutions within the apartment, achieved through the introduction of a hallway with storage compartments at the entrance, effectively dividing the kitchen and dining areas with elegant arches.
“This design solution not only addresses storage needs but also offers added privacy to the kitchen space, demonstrating our studio’s commitment to functional elegance.”
For the bedrooms, Jully opted for an overall scheme that would promote a cosy and relaxing ambiance – a goal that was also achieved by giving two of the bedrooms access to a spacious back terrace.
“The apartment embodies the elegance of Scandinavian design, creating a serene and stylish environment. Clean lines, light-filled spaces, and natural materials define the interior, with a natural oak wood kitchen serving as a warm focal point,” says Jully.
“Soft beige and light grey tones, complemented by wooden furniture elements, contribute to the harmonious atmosphere. Elegant arches enhance the flow and functionality of the space, adding architectural interest while maintaining an open feel,” the interior designer says, adding that all these elements were crafted to create a cohesive and inviting space.
“As a studio, our aim is to create spaces that are not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional and enduring, aligning with the rich cultural heritage and unique architectural style of Malta.”
