A collection of rugs inspired by modern abstract art, titled Zig Zag, marks the first creative collaboration between local multidisciplinary creative studio DAAA Haus and Jaipur Rugs, a renowned Indian carpet manufacturer headquartered in Jaipur.
Keith Pillow, Founder and Creative Director at DAAA Haus, describes the carpets in this collection as “an intricate interplay of bold, irregular black volumes set against a pristine white negative space, meticulously connected by a slender thread of vibrant colour.”
Speaking to DesignDispatch about this collaboration, he says “The Zig Zag collection is not the first carpet collection for DAAA Haus. In 2021 we launched the Convergence Carpet Collection in collaboration with Cocoon Rugs.”
“Following the media coverage of the Convergence collection, we were approached by Jaipur Rugs about a possible collaboration. A simple coffee meeting one afternoon in Milan turned into this beautiful collection that provided an incredible and enriching experience.”
“The Zig Zag collection is the first collaboration with Jaipur Rugs and we are excited to see what the future holds. The feedback has been incredible so far.”
Each of the four carpets in the collection – Blocks, Mosaic, Silhouette and Cross Section – is described by the studio as a visual representation of the essence of life, where stark contrasts between the black volumes and the white backdrop represents the dichotomy of our world.
“Here, the black represents the structures and creations that humans build, such as architecture and products, while the white signifies the void, the negative space from which all meaning emanates.”
Drawing connections between these two constructs is a coloured zig-zag stitch, which “illustrates how, in our quest for meaning, we infuse life into the structures and objects that define our world. The collection not only celebrates the beauty of contrasts but also the significance of human influence in shaping the world around us.”
For the Blocks carpet, the team created a design that echoes a close up of a rubble wall, a commonplace sighting in rural parts of Malta, while the Mosaic iteration pays homage to the artistry and history of this ancient Roman pattern.
The Zig Zag collection will be on display during the annual Milan furniture fair, Salone del Mobile, between 16-21 April, after which it will be available internationally via Jaipur Rugs.
