From evocative landscapes painted with vivid and saturated colours to expressionist works that invite viewers to take a closer look at the ordinary objects that exist around us, we’ve rounded up visual exhibitions open throughout the month of April that should make it onto your calendars.
Reflections – Lina Rincon
Colombia’s vibrant summertime landscapes inspired the solo exhibition of Norwegian artist Lina Rincon, currently on display at Christine X Art Gallery in Sliema. The artist captures the warmth and essence of spaces connected to her upbringing in her birthland of Colombia through vivid scenes featuring bright skies, azure waters and architecture, which point towards her search for belonging after two decades spent living in Europe. Until 25th April.
Land & Sea – Christopher Saliba, Marisa Attard & Henry Falzon
A collective exhibition at Gallery23 in Balzan brings together the diverse works and styles of three artists who present their own interpretations on the theme of land and sea. Christopher Saliba’s vivid and colour-charged landscapes, Marisa Attard’s tongue-in-cheek illustrations and Henry Falzon’s captivating perspectives express specific viewpoints of landscapes and scenes of Malta and Gozo as seen through the artists’ eyes. Until 26 April.
Outside the Box – Sue Gregory
In line with the theme of her second solo exhibition at Gemelli Art Gallery within Ta’ Qali Crafts Village, Sue Gregory presents her diverse range of styles using watercolour as her primary medium. Abstract seascapes, portraits and architectural paintings featuring detailed facades coexist under the same subject, with some creatively extending out from the confines of her canvas and onto the mount, in a tangible reflection of working outside the box. Until 24th April.
Simple Expressions of Complex Thoughts
Hosted by Strada Stretta and Valletta Cultural Agency, and curated by Hannah Dowling, Simple Expressions of Complex Thoughts is a collaborative art exhibition being held at Splendid in Valletta, featuring 30 works by Maltese and Malta-based artists, including fashion designer Luke Azzopardi and performance artist Lihong Bai. Through various media, the participating artists seek to convey profound ideas through abstract expressionism, inspired by the artistic philosophies of Latvian-American painter Mark Rothko. Until 21st April.
In Bloom – Julia Borg
In this first solo exhibition by Julia Borg – an artist born in Germany to Russian parents who has made Malta her home – an exploration of the beauty of flowers marked the start of a colourful journey that culminated in an exhibition at the Palm Court Lounge at the Phoenicia Malta, curated by Dr Charlene Vella. In this series, the flowers are blown up, inviting viewers to look closely at the beauty of nature, while seeing the world through her eyes. Until 30th April.
