Artist and graphic designer Stephanie Borg, who has carved her own niche through an eponymous brand that celebrates Maltese heritage, culture and traditions, can add a new feat to her list of successes: making it to the international news.
During a recent broadcast on CNN, the artist’s vibrant illustration depicting a variety of Maltese doors was spotted on news anchor Brianna Keilar’s coffee mug (watch here) on her desk while she introduced a guest on her programme.
Sharing her reaction to the discovery, Stephanie said “Sharing Malta’s culture and colours has always been my mission, and thanks to Brianna, we’ve reached a wider audience!”
The design, which forms part of a larger collection of products including prints, coasters, tea towels and wooden bookmarks, helped put Stephanie’s work on the local map with its intricate depictions of traditional doors, and has remained popular ever since its introduction in 2008.
Across her many collections, the surface pattern designer is driven to preserve and promote the charms and quirks of Maltese culture through iconic visual references – be it patterned tiles, a distinctive door or intricate wrought iron work seen on windows and balconies, the latter providing inspiration for the Ferò collection, prompted during renovation works on her own Rabat home in 2012.
