Memorial Immortal
This solo exhibition by Sergio Muscat is an introspective meditation on what lingers after life has passed. Curated by Sue Falzon and on display at Valletta Contemporary, the collection of works draws from an autobiographical archive of photographs, exploring how images, and the systems we build around them, persist, evolve, and continue to transform beyond our presence. Until 28th February.
Poggejt ghax Ghajjejt – Antoine Paul Camilleri
Antoine Paul Camilleri’s exhibition on display at Il-Kamra ta’ Fuq in Mqabba explores the simple, meditative feeling of simply sitting down and letting go – an idea that emerged during a visit by curator Melanie Erixon to the artist’s studio, where she noticed Camilleri’s numerous sculptures of seated figures.”The exhibition celebrates the art of ‘doing nothing’, learning to resist the constant impulse to be productive every moment of the day.” Until 18th January.
Variations – Matthew Attard
In his first solo exhibition since representing Malta at the 2024 Venice Biennale with his acclaimed exhibition I Will Follow the Ship, Matthew Attard continues his investigation into the rich and layered history of the Maltese islands with Variations, on display at R Gallery in Sliema. The artitst’s work bridges drawing with new or emerging technology, such as eye-tracking, 3D scanning and artificial intelligence, pushing the limits of image making within the context of quintessentially Maltese landscapes. Until 30th January.
Desire – Lawrence Buttigieg
In this multidisciplinary event at Spazju Kreattiv in Valletta, Lawrence Buttigieg showcases his long-term, practice-based research that blends his architectural background with themes of identity, gender, and womanhood. The exhibition features paintings, box-assemblages, film, and interactive digital platforms that reveal the fluid, illusory nature of desire and the shifting boundaries that exist between reality and fantasy. 15th January-1st March.
Dream Welding – Leo Chircop
Leo Chircop’s debut solo exhibition at the Malta Society of Arts in Valletta, titled Dream Welding, presents a meld between traditional painting and the human nude. In his collection of photographs, the figure and the sea shift positions between being the object and the subject, exploring his background in art history as well as his interest in contemporary photography. Until 7th February.
A Place of Return – Yang Tang
Chinese artist Yang Tang invites visitors into a quiet world shaped by courtyards, bridges, scholar’s rocks and water, presented as inner landscapes where the mind and body slow down – a visual representation of a meditative state of mind. The paintings, created between 2017 and 2020 on display within the stone vaults at the Malta Society of Arts in Valletta, reflect the artist’s search for stillness while living in fast-growing Shanghai, echoing an experience many feel locally today. Until 29th January.
