Malta’s creatives and designers across a broad spectrum of disciplines will descend onto various locations around Valletta for a week-long programme of design-focused exhibitions and events in the second edition of designMT, a national expo organised by the Malta Crafts Foundation launching today.
The themed exhibitions and thematic event will be staged in five different locations in Valletta: Auberge D’Aragon, Fortress Builders, the Church of Our Lady of Pilar and Valletta Design Cluster.
“Building up on the success of the first edition held last year, designMT – a celebration of creativity where tradition meets innovation – will be showcasing a diverse collection of contemporary design pieces, carefully selected for their blend of functionality, style, and cultural significance, reflecting modern living in a meaningful way,” the team notes.
“The exhibitions will be complemented by thematic events that delve into contemporary design trends and innovative advancements, with discussions focused on the fields where design significantly shapes our daily experiences.”
The expo brings together a mix of industry leaders and emerging talents across furniture and fashion design, product and multi-disciplinary design. Among the participants are fashion brand Charles & Ron, shoe designer Becky Grech, perfumer and aromatherapist Stephen Cordina, jewellery designer Marisa Zarb, bookbinder Glen Calleja and ceramics artist Nico Conti.
In addition to the exhibitors, the events will target industry practitioners and other stakeholders with a vested interest in the themes being explored, inviting them to engage and contribute to the dialogue.
Throughout the week, thematic events will dive deeper into design’s impact and role in shaping daily life, with discussions on spatial design, food and beverage, digital design and how AI is impacting its future, and fashion design viewed through a cultural lens.
Entrance to all exhibitions is free. Venues will be open between Monday 29th September and Saturday 4th October from 10am to 8pm, with extended opening hours until 11pm on Saturday during Notte Bianca.
