For the second year running, an event dedicated to engaging the minds and hands of makers, creators, inventors and the general public will take place on Saturday 10th May, where visitors are invited to participate in a day of hands-on creativity, repair, and innovation inspired by the global Maker Movement.
Tinkering Day, which will be held at Valletta Design Cluster, is an interactive and community-focused event hosted by Valletta Cultural Agency that invites people of all ages to explore innovations, join interactive workshops, learn from inspiring talks and celebrate the art of repair and craftmanship.
Artists, crafters and creative industry leaders will be on hand to volunteer their insights and skills, engaging with anyone interested to learn about their craft, while “celebrating the passion and ingenuity of local inventors, makers and hobbyists of all ages.”
A Repair Café will also be set up, run by skilled volunteers who offer to restore cherished items that would otherwise be thrown away. “Whether it’s a chipped ceramic plate, a wooden chair with a wobble or a torn fabric cushion, we’ll do our best to breathe new life into them,” the event team says.
An amateur 3D printing competition, set up by local company Invent 3D will also take place, inviting creative minds to take on a challenge and design a 3D-printable object that solves a common, everyday problem.
“Whether it’s a clever home gadget, a handy gaming accessory or a simple solution to an everyday frustration, this competition is all about practical creativity.”
Tinkering Day follows the ethos of the Maker Movement – defined as an umbrella term for independent inventors, designers and tinkerers with an admiration for self-reliance, contemporary design and personal technology such as 3D printers.
