As one of the latest additions to the expansive Vitra family, Anagram, a modular sofa system designed by Swiss-based studio Panter&Tourron, is possibly as dynamic as a sofa can get. Its flexibility is inherent to its design, making it capable of adapting to every-day life, as well as life’s big changes. “We invited Panter&Tourron to participate in an ambitious and forward-thinking challenge – to design a sofa system able to accommodate our future living and working needs for the next 30 years,” says Vitra, a design-led furniture company represented by Vivendo.
In its research, the studio explored past modes of living, looking at social, economic and environmental changes that have modified society over the last decades, and its projection towards the future of living.
Their findings pointed towards a more diverse and often unpredictable modern lifestyle, a greater blurring of boundaries such as those between home and office segments, and an emergence of alternative ways of living and models based on sharing.
“Their research led them to develop a flexible lounge system that can accommodate the needs of different users and fit the ever-changing configurations of future living and working,” says Vitra.
“The central idea behind this flexible system is a platform with attachable elements designed around an invisible grid that can be scaled up incrementally to optimise configurability and use of space. This allows multiple layout options with a minimal footprint.”
Composed of islands and modules, Anagram’s seating arrangement can be changed with ease. “The platform modules are designed as islands that can be combined with other modules and fitted with elements such as backrests, side panels and attachable tables.”
Its flexibility is enabled by a range of technical features, such as a 360-degree platform that can be fitted – and adjusted – on all four sides, an easy click mechanism where the user simply presses down on the part until it locks into place, and connecting elements that ensure stability and correct spacing between individual units.
From a classic L-shaped sofa or small reading nook to a practical sleeping area for guests or formal waiting area, the possibilities are vast and varied, and designed for longevity.
