Watercolour artist and illustrator Kenneth Zammit Tabona’s works are instantly recognisable – his dreamy depictions of Maltese interiors and landscapes are timeless snapshots imbued with a sense of nostalgia, often featuring details – be it chinoiserie or chessboard tiles, or architectural details in lush gardens – that reflect his love for antiques and nature.
The very same details and pictorial language seen in his paintings have now been translated into a collection of cushions, in collaboration with interiors company Jade and furniture company JoinwellFxb – turning the artist’s paintings into a covetable piece of home decor.
Speaking to DesignDispatch about the collaboration, Kenneth says his foray into interiors happened somewhat “by accident. These things always do!”
“I was experimenting with watercolours in my studio and created a set of three, square paintings featuring leafy plants, stalks, trees and natural details.”
A friend of the artist’s, Gabriel Zammit, who collaborates with JoinwellFxb through Jade – an established local producer of upholstered furniture – remarked that the set of paintings would make lovely cushions – “it so happened that they were just the right size, 40x40cm,” says Kenneth.
From a prototype to production, the limited-edition sets – only 50 of which were produced and are sold as a trio – were launched last weekend at the Qormi showroom. The artist’s print is displayed on the front of each cushion, while a complementary colour is used for the back, finished with a trim in the same vibrant colour.
The collection is being sold exclusively at JoinwellFxb.
