For some, patterned-everything interiors might bring back nostalgic memories of childhood homes, when curtains, lampshades, pillows and the bedspread were fondly coordinated in the same pattern, creating an overwhelmingly decorated space which, despite its busyness, had an oddly calming effect.
The love for all-out pattern has been making a comeback, with designers not shying away from embracing the use of patterned fabrics and wallpaper in every aspect of a space, from the walls to the soft furnishings to the decor. Here are some examples of a modern take on this timeless look.
Floral everything
The founders of British interiors brand House of Hackney used their Hollyhocks print to decorate every corner of their modest box room, embracing the small size of the room with wall-to-wall florals.
White and blues
In this bedroom, where the only part not covered in fabric are the switches, blue and white florals create a tent-like cocoon, broken up only by the framed wall art that interrupts the explosion of pattern.
Stately designs
A large-format floral pattern by French furnishing brand Pierre Frey washes this space in red, pink and blue, reminiscent of the opulent interiors of stately 18th-century European buildings.
Neutral tones
All-over pattern need not be overly loud. This hallway, designed by Born & Bred Studio, is decorated in a forest-themed mural in neutral tones of sage and blue, creating a serene setting.
Expressive prints
Australian designer Anna Spiro created an expansive and expressive world with a hand-painted wallpaper depicting a scene of sea, sand and sky, complemented by coordinated soft furnishings that add vibrant pops of colour.
Vivid hues
‘More is more’ could translate into variations of colours and prints with no obvious sense of coordination – here, green walls and matching cushions are paired with a colourful sofa and rug in an eclectic mix of styles and design references.
