Legendary performer Sir Elton John will be giving up the entire contents of his former home in Atlanta, Georgia, during an auction starting on 21st February with auction house Christie’s.
Located within an affluent neighbourhood on Peachtree Road, this home served as the artist’s base for 30 years and is credited with inspiring his desire to collect art and objects that resonated with him on his journey to sobriety.
The duplex apartment purchased by the singer in 1991 was sold last year, while its contents will be presented “in a series of landmark sales at Christie’s Rockefeller Center,” the auction house announced, with each of the eight sales focusing on a particular aspect of his life and vast collection.
Called ‘The Collection of Sir Elton John: Goodbye Peachtree Road’, the auction will feature his Yamaha Conservatory grand piano, a black-and-white Vogue cover of model Jean Patchett by Irving Penn, 19th-century sculpture and crucifixes, and a treasure trove of art, objects and his vast private collection of photography.
Also up for auction is a set of three Italian 19th-century gilt armchairs upholstered in Versace velvet, a porcelain Medusa table service also by Versace, and a 1990 Bentley Continental convertible.
Tash Perrin, the deputy chairman for Christie’s Americas said in a statement “This extraordinary collection not only showcases a diverse array of remarkable objects that encapsulate Elton’s unique life, work, and art, but also provides our clients with a glimpse into the profound impact that the city of Atlanta had on him.”
The sale of the apartment and now all of its contents coincided with the musician’s final tour, which concluded last year. At the time, he told Wall Street Journal, “I didn’t know what the first apartment that I bought would lead to. But it was a wonderful surprise. Everything about Atlanta was a surprise.”
