Italian architect Antonio Citterio’s latest swivel chair for Vitra, ACX, is described by the veteran furniture designer as an embodiment of “the extensive know-how acquired throughout 30 years of close collaboration.”
The ACX is the tenth iteration of this design, composed of approximately 60% of recycled materials and “up to 100% recyclable”, depending on the model.
“Its construction, materials, production, logistics and maintenance are designed to achieve a long life-cycle with the smallest possible carbon footprint,” says Vitra, represented locally by Vivendo.
The swivel chair has a notably ‘untechnical’ appearance for an office chair, owing to its automatic synchronised mechanism and compact design, which offers optimal comfort for the user without the need for adjustments, other than the seat height.
“ACX has a relaxed and inviting aesthetic: with its clean lines and choice of knitted fabrics in a wide selection of colours, the task chair functions as a design element in the office instead of a necessary addition tolerated for the purpose of ergonomics,” says the company.

The chair is available in three models: ACX Mesh with its knitted fabric and ACX Soft which comes with a padded knitted fabric cover, both of which are made of recycled polyester, as well as ACX Light, which is only available in black and has a standard net-weave cover.
Antonio Citterio and Vitra’s long-standing collaboration since 1988 has delivered a broad range of products, including desk chairs, sofas and armchairs, alongside a vast portfolio of work in the industrial design sector that includes collaborations with Flos, Hermès, B&B Italia and Technogym.
Here’s a brief look at the collaborative process between Vitra and Antonio Citterio for the ACX task chair.
