What might initially seem an unlikely choice for a ‘colour of the year’ soon becomes a welcomed alternative to the more mainstream COTY selections of recent years – and one that appears to be in line with the interior mood of the moment.
As dark and bold colours continue to find favour in the home, American paint company Behr announces a 2024 colour of the year that lies on the spectrum of black. It’s called Cracked Pepper, and is described as a soft shade of black that is versatile, confident and pairs well with many other colours that may already be present in the home.

The range of applications of this charcoal shade is as versatile as its emotional potential, which can go from moody to cosy in an instant when used for a statement wall, kitchen cabinets, or as a solid wash for an entire room.
Erika Woelfel, Vice President of colour and creative services at Behr, says the colour choice, which is part of the company’s designer collection palette, is intended to encourage homeowners to embrace darker tones.
“The moment now is about optimism, awakening the senses, and elevating how you feel – and a room with a soft black really checks the box on all of those things.”
