Finnish design brand, Woodio, has created an ecological alternative to ceramic sanitary ware using an innovative bio-material with the same name, effectively creating a toilet made of a solid wood composite.

The Block toilet, which Woodio dubs as the ‘world’s first 100% waterproof solid wood composite toilet’ is made with a material technology that combines wood off-cuts with fossil-based polyester and bioplastic resins.
It has the same functions as a regular ceramic toilet, with additional advantages, according to the brand – the material is highly durable and impact-resistant, easy to keep clean because of its dirt-repelling coating, and feels warm to the touch.

The product’s manufacturing process is a central part of its sustainability credentials.
The company says it uses locally-sourced aspen and birch from Finland’s forest industry, all products are made in its own local factory, and no high-temperature ovens or excessive amounts of water are used to make the final product, contrary to the production of ceramic goods which requires them to be fired at extremely high temperatures.
”Our mission is to change the traditional material norms used in bathrooms and kitchens,” says Petro Lahtinen, the Founder and CEO of Woodio, whose design portfolio includes bathtubs, washbasins, toilets and wall panels with the same material.
