Beyond their role as a source of storage in the home, modular shelving systems can work as room dividers, a vitrine for a collection of beautiful objects – and even conversation pieces. Design Dispatch rounds up six striking designs that expertly combine form and function.
PI by Ethnicraft
The PI collection designed by Alain van Havre for Belgian furniture company Ethnicraft displays a polished yet imperfect finish, intended to “honour nature’s design”. Each shelf is made from mahogany and finished by hand to retain the individual character of the wood. Available at Camilleriparismode.
Float by DARI
With its modular flexibility and vast choice of finishes, this library and shelving unit by furniture manufacturer DARI boasts a sleek yet functional design in a contemporary style. Whether as a single carcass or full wall-to-wall unit, Float can be adapted to any living space.
Cheft by Studio Pousti
This geometric bookshelf made from interlocking sheets of wood can be assembled without any nails or screws. Designed by Maryam Pousti, founder of architecture and design firm Studio Pousti, the Cheft bookshelf, which is manufactured in Italy, can also function as a partition, and a conversation piece.
Dendel by DAAA Haus
Architecture and design practice DAAA Haus created a wall-mounted shelving system called Dendel which can be configured to suit the needs of the end-user. The modular system was inspired by 1980s-style furniture, and offers flexibility for storage of books and furniture, as well as a standalone feature.
Natasha by La Primavera
Anodised aluminium uprights serve as the skeleton to this modular shelving system by La Primavera, available at Oxford House, complete with wooden shelves in a white or dark oak finish. The system can be wall mounted or installed as a double-sided bookcase, effectively dividing a space.
Vertio by King
Australian company King Furniture came up with a wall system, called Vertio, that can be reconfigured and reassembled with ease around the home, for both large and compact living spaces. Its design allows it to be wall- or compression mounted and fitted with shelves as well as cabinets.
