From a café housed within a WWII-era building to another designed around a former brewery, these places prioritised their design as much as the food and drink they serve, embracing their heritage and locations in the process. Here at DesignDispatch, we’ve singled out five places for a good coffee in inspiring surroundings.
Klay
The interior design of Klay, a spacious eatery and café overlooking Balluta Bay, finds harmony in contrast. Rattan, bamboo, and dark-coloured furniture offset the ample natural light that floods through the space, crating a moody, albeit tranquil atmosphere.
Kettles
Housed within the Farsons Brewhouse and designed by DAAA Haus, the layout and interiors of Kettles revolve around the three copper kettles that were used by the former brewery. The bow-window facade fills the space with natural light, while curved seating booths, dark furniture and rough textures pay homage to Malta’s industrial era.
Bohini
Bohini, located right behind Mgarr church, embraces its small space through cosy interiors that are an essential part of its charm. Soft lighting, dark textured walls, wooden furniture and plenty of black accents amplify the curated experience it seeks to provide.
Berta
Housed within a former café that originated during the Second World War on a residential street in Gharghur, Berta, designed by 3DM Architecture, sought to achieve harmony through simple forms, light tones and natural materials. Travertine, lime base plaster and oak timber feature in the design, allowing the old limestone to show the character and age of this charming coffee house.
Word of Mouth
The Marshall jukebox that greets guests at the entrance of Word of Mouth sets the tone for the ambience of this fun and playful jaunt, in which music, food and good times are given equal importance. Its retro-inspired interiors include colourful furniture, plenty of wall art and upbeat pink upholstery.
